Sanhedrin 4:5 (Mishnah, P. Blackman trans.)

And [a single man only was first created] for the sake of peace in the human race, that no man might say to his fellow, “My ancestor was greater than your thy ancestor” and that the heretics [minim] should not say, “There are many powers in heaven . . .”

Sanhedrin 38a (Babylonian Talmud, J. Schachter trans., Soncino ed.)

Our Rabbis taught: Man was created alone. And why so? — That the [Minim] might not say: There are many ruling powers in Heaven.

Our Rabbis taught: Adam was created [last of all beings] on the eve of Sabbath. And why? — Lest the [Minim] say: The Holy One, blessed be He, had a partner in His work of creation.

[“Minim” is used to designate heretics of various kinds, including the Jewish disciples of Yeshua. The word literally means “believers.”]

Sanhedrin 38b (Babylonian Talmud, J. Schachter trans., Soncino ed.)

R. Johanan said: In all the passages which the Minim have taken [as grounds] for their heresy, their refutation is found near at hand. . . . [For example:] Till thrones were placed and One that was Ancient did sit [Daniel 7:9]. Why were these [plural forms] necessary? —To teach R. Johanan's dictum: The Holy One, blessed be He, does nothing without consulting His heavenly Court [lit. family]. . . . But how explain Till thrones were placed? — One [throne] was for Himself and one for David [i.e. Messiah]. Even as it has been taught: One was for Himself and one for David; this is R. Akiba's view. R. Jose protested to him: Akiba, how long wilt thou profane the Shechinah? Rather, one was for justice, and the other for mercy.
